第一堂課
出國租屋不要怕、重點幫你抓一把

Today, we are going to talk about what to watch out for when renting a new place in a foreign country.
今天，我們要來談論在外國租新住所時要留意的事情。
If you're a student planning on studying abroad, finding a place to live will be one of the first things you'll need to do.
如果你是一個計畫出國唸書的學生，找一個地方住會是你將必須做的前幾件事情之一。
Although some schools offer dormitory options, most students choose to arrange their own accommodations due to increasing costs in student housing.
儘管有些學校提供宿舍選擇，多數學生因學生住宿不斷增漲的費用選擇安排他們自己的住處。
Therefore, I'm going to share with you a few tips.
因此，我要來和你分享一些要點。
First, let's look at budget.
首先，我們來看看預算。
If you're on a loose budget, renting your own flat is probably the best option, while those on a tighter budget can consider looking for shared housing.
如果你的手頭寬鬆，租你自己的公寓也許是最棒的選擇，而那些手頭較緊的可以考慮尋找合租。
Shared housing is cheaper but requires you to live with other housemates.
合租比較便宜但需要你和其他室友一起住。
Once you've decided on a budget, we can move on to the next step.

Research the neighborhood.
調查鄰近地區。
Is the unit close to any bus stops or major subway lines?
這一間房有靠近任何公車站或主要的地鐵路線嗎？
How long would the commute be from your place to school?
從你的住所通勤到學校要多久？
Normally, living close to campus costs more but saves you precious time and commuting expenses in the end.
通常來說，居住靠近校園花費較多，但到最後為你省下了寶貴的時間和通勤費。
So it's important to take these things into account when deciding on a budget, and find a balance.
所以決定預算時將這些事情納入考量，並找到一個平衡是很重要的。
Next, when living on your own, you'll eventually find that cooking at home is much cheaper and more convenient than eating out.
接著，當你自己住的時候，你最終會發現在家煮來吃比外食更加便宜也更方便。
Therefore, it's best to make sure that your unit comes with a full kitchen and that there's a supermarket close to where you live—or, even better, a local store that sells goods from your home country.

As an international student living away from home, these places will be helpful whenever you're feeling a bit homesick.

Also, don't forget about safety.

Living alone in a foreign country can be a bit scary and dangerous at times.

Make sure to choose a neighborhood that is safe and well lit at night.

If you're not sure which neighborhoods are safer, you can always ask for help from the student union or the student service center at your school.

Once you've finally found the perfect place, what you'll need to do next is check with the landlord on what kind of furniture is provided.

This includes everything from a bed, closet, desk, TV, and so on.
這包括從床、衣櫥、書桌、電視等等的所有東西。
Also, make sure to report any damages as soon as you move in.

If you have any special needs, you can also ask the landlord to see whether he or she is willing to help you out.

Lastly, it's important to find out who your future housemates will be.

Living with others from different countries can be a challenging yet fascinating experience.

Not only will it give you the opportunity to learn about other cultures, but you can also make new friends along the way.

Now that we've covered all of the points mentioned above, it's time to sign the lease.
現在既然我們已經涵蓋所有上面提到的要點，是時候簽租約了。
Make sure that you go through all the details in the lease.
確保你檢查租約中的所有細節。
And don't forget to find out how much the deposit is and when and how you're gonna pay your rent each month.
也別忘了查明押金是多少，以及你每個月要何時及如何支付你的租金。
Also, make sure everything is written down clearly in ink and that the landlord has answered all of your questions.
還有，確保每件事都清楚地用筆墨寫下來，且房東已回應你所有的問題。
Once you have everything settled, you can finally begin to enjoy life in your new country.
一旦你讓每件事都被安頓好，你終於可以開始享受在你的新國家的生活。

South Africa is different

Leave gray behind.

South Africa is different.

The you who leaves South Africa won't be the same as the you who arrived.
離開南非的那個你和抵達南非的那個你將不會是相同的。
You'll find that there's nothing ordinary about this place because you don't just visit South Africa; you will meet South Africa.
你會發現，關於這個地方沒有任何平凡之處，因為你不只是拜訪南非；你會認識南非。
You will meet the wide-open beaches of the Wild Coast and the chief whose ancestors have lived in the hills above the Kwanyana River for a thousand years.

You'll meet a taxi driver and a shebeen queen who you will never forget.

...because when you open your arms to embrace this country, you'll find that the you who leaves South Africa won't be the same you who arrived;

Travel Tips：how to talk to strangers

Hello, fellow travelers. Welcome!

Recently, I talked about traveling alone, and how absolutely fulfilling, exciting, and amazing it can be.

But today, I thought I would take that topic a step further, because traveling alone, yes, is about being alone.

The first thing you have to do is turn on that very elusive sixth sense, and the seventh, and the eighth, because if you want to meet new people or strike up a conversation with a stranger, you are going to have to be sensitive to what's around you...

Meeting new people is easier than you think; I promise.

First of all(連音~fersterfo), you gotta choose the right location.

Bars are great—but the early hours: none of those 4 a.m. senseless conversations.

Coffeehouses, any restaurant that has a communal table is fantastic—basically, wherever you have a sense of community.

If you see people sharing benches or table, bingo!
If they are sitting alone, quiet, with their heads in a book with headphones, not so much.

So respect the space; just read the signs.

Asking questions that require more than a yes or no answer is the best way to start up a conversation, but you have to ease into it.

So first, you start off with something very simple, a classic, something like, "It's a beautiful day, right?"

And then, if they answer very quickly and move right on to texting, you move on.

So it could be something like, "You know, I'm visiting. Do you have any favorite spots around here that you can recommend?"

And then you take it up from there.

You'll be surprised at how easy this is.

What I've learned is that people, in general, like to talk.

So as long as you're not threatening and you're friendly and you're willing to listen, you're in a great position to start with.

The golden rule here is to not do this with the sole purpose of finding a lifelong friend every time you go out.

That will not happen.

You have to be absolutely okay with going out there and having no one want to talk to you.

And, believe me, if that happens, there's nothing wrong with you; you're absolutely friendly, and wonderful, and amazing, and lovely; you just didn't run into anyone that wanted to strike up a chat.

So, totally okay.

But let me tell you. I have made lifelong friends because of this, and it's absolutely wonderful; very rare.

And maybe you'll just have a short little conversation on a bench that you'll remember forever.
而或許你只會有你將永遠記住的在長椅上一段短暫的小對話。
The bottom line is this: You have to be open and try it out.

And the next time that somebody sits next to you and strikes up a conversation with you, remember those moments when they let you down, and talk it up.
